The beginning of a young lawyer’s career is, naturally, a time of many first experiences. Many of these “firsts” are so nerve-wracking they churn your stomach: the first time you step into court with the weight of someone’s future on your shoulders, the first time you stand up next to a client and wait with bated breath for the judge to hand down a sentence, and the first time a witness changes his testimony on the stand.

Despite the omnipresence of translation and interpretation in today’s globalized world, we often forget that without the skilled work of translators and interpreters, many people would simply be left out. Interpreters and activists Brian J. Hoffman and Roberto Tijerina will share their experiences and explore some of the ways in which lack of access to interpretation services derails efforts toward social justice in the United States.
